  • including tips for optimal use and training

General tips:
  1. Before starting with the training your dog should always be warmed up.
  2. Never let your dog practise on a full stomach and do not feed your dog right after the training.
  3. Do not expect too much of your dog and challenge him slowly.
  4. Make this sport fitting to your dog.
  5. Let your dog rest during the training units, so that keeps its joy for this activity. Make sure that fresh water is always be available to your dog and let its have a short breather right after drinking.
  6. Please note, that the dog’s training should always finish with a positive experience.
  7. Puppies and young dogs should only be trained after consulting the veterinary in order to avoid potential injuries.

Important: Pet your dog and give it a reward during the training - this motivates and supports the trust.

Assembling instructions: Align the poles in a distance of approx. 50 - 65 cm. Therefor use the included cord. In case of later participation in dog competitions it is necessary to start with a distance of 60 cm. The necessary distances are marked on the included cord. Please remove the cord after assembling in order to avoid the risk of injury for you and your dog.

The training can start:
Learning the slalom is the most difficult and time-consuming exercise in dog agility. Be aware that you need a lot of time and patience for the training. Raise the level slowly and practise only short training units, so that your dog keeps his motivation.
  1. Start the training with 8 poles and then raise the number up to 10 – 12 pcs.
  2. At a dog competition your dog always starts a slalom from the right hand side (so the first slalom pole is on the dog’s left hand side). If you intend to take part in dog competitions it is useful to train only this way.
  3. At the beginning of the slalom give your dog a command like e.g. ‘slalom’.
  4. Repeat each training phase several times in order to make sure, that your dog has understood the training phase and can cope with it.
  5. After your dog has run through the slalom parcours, you should praise your dog. Give your dog a little dog treat from time to time.

  6. If you are only a little experienced in dog training or you would like to take part in dog competitions during the dog training, it might be advisable to join a dog school or to train in a dog sports club. There you can get a lot of tips from experienced dog trainers and training mistakes can be avoided.

The training phase:
The slalom can be arranged in 2 different types, which have the same ambition.

Assembling as a V-shaped version:
Line up the poles, so that the front view of the aglility slalom looks like a “V”. Lead your dog through the poles, by luring it with a toy or a small piece of food. At the end of the slalom the dog will be rewarded by playing with the toy or giving him a tasty snack.

During the training process your dog should get a reward after reaching the end of the slalom, so that there will be less need to lure the dog. The standard should be carefully enhanced in order that your dog will not skip a single pole.

If your dog runs through the slalom independently, try to raise the speed. Please take care that your dog does not jump over the angled poles. The V-shaped slalom should be arranged more and more steeply until it is arranged uprightly in the end. Then your dog needs your leading: Start with a slow round and adequate leading. As with the v-shaped version done before, try to reduce the leading and raise the speed.

Assembling as a lane:
Arrange the poles on 2 parallel lines, so that it becomes a lane, which should be wide enough, so that you and your dog can walk through it side by side. The topview shows a zigzag-shaped version. Take your dog through the lane by luring it with a toy or small piece of food. At the end of the lane the dog is rewarded by playing with the toy or giving him a tasty snack. Repeat these exercises before the lane is narrowed, so that your dog will not be overstrained. Then reduce the distance between the poles, so that only your dog can run through the lane, while you run alongside.
During the training process your dog should get a reward after reaching the end of the lane, so that there will be less need to lure the dog.

If you get the feeling that your dog independently runs through the lane, you can arrange the poles with a closer distance. Therefor it is necessary to lead the dog, so that he does not skip a pole while moving through the slalom. Repeat the procedure until you can line up the poles. Now you can reduce the leading and raise the speed.

If your dog likes the training with the agility slalom, you can challenge it by a hurdle (item 3207). It is an agility equipment, which trains your dog to jump
