Details:

  • prepare your dog a varied fitness programme
  • exercises keep the dog fit and give a long and healthy life
  • playing with the dog intensifies the relation and helps to build up confidence in the master

General tips:
  1. Before starting with the training your dog should always be warmed up.
  2. Never let your dog practise on a full stomach and do not feed your dog right after the training.
  3. Do not expect too much of your dog and challenge him slowly.
  4. Make this sport fitting to your dog.
  5. Let your dog rest during the training units, so that he will keep his joy for this activity. Make sure that fresh water will always be available to your dog and let him have a short breather right after drinking.
  6. Please note, that the dog’s training should always finish with a positive experience.
  7. Puppies and young dogs should only be trained after consulting the veterinary in order to avoid potential injuries.
Important: Pet your dog and give him a reward during the training - this motivates and supports the trust

Assembling instructions:
Before building the hurdle define a flat area, so that your dog will jump straightly. Shift the carriers with unfixed screws over the bars. Put up the bars uprightly with an interior distance of approx. 120 cm, so that the hurdle can be applied loosely. Tighten the screws until the carriers do not slip anymore.

The training can start:
  1. Start the training with a low level adjustment. It helps to prevent your dog from creeping underneath the hurdle. Put the hurdle far down so that your dog can easily jump over it.
  2. Repeat each training phase several times in order to make sure that your dog has understood the training phase and can cope with it.
  3. After your dog has overcome the obstruction you should praise your dog. Give your dog a little dog treat from time to time.
  4. If you are only a little experienced in dog training or you would like to take part in dog competitions during the dog training, it might be advisable to join a dog school or to train in a dog sports club. There you can get a lot of tips from experienced dog trainers and training mistakes can be avoided.

The training phase:
You can start the first training phase with a dog lead or a second person:

With dog lead: Post yourself and the dog in front of the hurdle. Now run with your dog over the hurdle or run along side the hurdle, while your dog jumps over it by himself.

With a second person: The second person and the dog are in front of the hurdle. The master is standing behind the hurdle and luring the dog with a toy or a piece of food so that he runs towards the master.

If this works without any problems after several trials, you can perfect the first training phase, by working without second person or respectively leaving out the dog lead.
If your dog copes with it successfully, you can start with the second training phase. Therefore place yourself and your dog in front of the hurdle, point at it and run with your dog towards the hurdle. Use a dog command like ’jump’ right before jumping.

Start the third training phase by removing yourself and the dog from the hurdle. Then run together towards the hurdle. Give your command for jumping, while your dog is jumping over the hurdle and you are running alongside the hurdle. The training can be made more difficult by adjusting the hurdle at a higher level and raising the speed.

If your dog likes the training with the hurdle, you can challenge him by a hoop (item no 3208). It is an agility equipment, which trains your dog to jump precisely.
